The third mini-conference, hosted by the College of Menominee Nation, occurred October 20-21, 2011, and featured several presentations and expert-led workshops. Attendees toured several of the Menominee Nation’s cultural institutions on Thursday evening, including:
- Menominee Nation Cultural Museum
- Menominee Indian High School Library
- College of Menominee Nation Library / Special Collections
Friday’s gathering began with two presentations:
- Ben Grignon: “Podcasting: libraries, technology, and language learning.” Ben Grignon is the librarian at the Menominee Indian High School Library.
- Shannon Martin: “Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe Culture & Lifeways.” Shannon Martin has served as the Director of the Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe Culture & Lifeways since December 2007. The Ziibiwing Center, the Midwest’s Premier Award-Winning American Indian Museum, is owned and operated by the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan. Shannon leads a team that addresses cultural & historic preservation, repatriation & reburial of ancestral remains, artistic expression & promotion, Tribal collections & archival management, cultural resource conservation, Ojibwe language revitalization, exhibition development, protection of intellectual property, and stewardship of Tribal cemeteries, burial grounds & sacred sites.
Following the presentations, CCK attendees participated in two expert-led hands-on workshops on archives and museum best practices:
- Amy Cooper Cary: “Introduction to Archival Best Practices.” Amy Cooper Cary is the Director of the Archival Studies Program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s School of Information Studies. She has consulted with the Arvid E. Miller Library and Museum of the Stockbridge-Munsee Community Band of Mohican Indians, and worked with the archives at the Hatathli Museum of Dine College on the Navajo Nation in Tsaile, Arizona.
- Claudia Jacobson: “Box Making for Museums and Archives.” Claudia Jacobson has worked for over 30 years on collections management issues and projects. As Registrar at the Milwaukee Public Museum, she is responsible for creating packing solutions for the Museum’s artifacts. She also teaches collections management for the Museum Studies Program of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee which includes training on storage and box-making. Claudia is also a member of the Wisconsin Federation of Museums Board.
